They said it couldn't happen, all the cracks to date were for the Japanese PSP, the pre- 1.5 firmware updated version. They said the 1.5 firmware fixed all that.
They'll be eating their hats for breakfast today, because:
Indianapolis (IN) - A video file released to a Web site for PlayStation Portable independent developers, appears to show an independently developed "Hello, World" test application running from memory stick, on a newer model PSP with firmware version 1.5.
Says Tom's Hardware, and Tom is a very reliable chap.

The link posted by Factory refers to the "Hello World" program running sucessfully on version 1.0 of the firmware.
